These images are a selection from a series I photographed for Fusion MMA, on Long Island, about the less well-known aspects of preparing for and participating in a nonprofessional kickboxing-fight event. Looking beyond the aggression inherent in a fight, these photos center the meaning of preparation and participation for the fighters, the team spirit, support and community involved in martial arts and kickboxing training. It showcases the intimate moments of a public event, the humane side beyond the spectacle.
